Rev. Dr. Valerie Stultz Memorial Staff Room Dedicated

On September 12, 2019, we were thrilled to dedicate the Rev. Dr. Valerie Stultz Memorial Staff Room here at Flat Rock Care Center. The Staff Room was dedicated by Karen Kilgo, President/CEO of Flat Rock Homes, Care Center, and Community Services. The dedication ceremony was held in the Flat Rock Gymnasium, across the hall from the Staff Room.

The event was attended by Rev. Dr. Stultz’s husband, Buck, and their daughter, Cara. There were also many past and present Flat Rock board members who had worked with Rev. Dr. Stultz in her mission for the care of the Staff at Flat Rock. Many Direct Support Professionals (DSP’s) and other staff attended the dedication as well.

Rev. Dr. Valerie Stultz spent many years serving on the Flat Rock board as the bishop’s representative for the East Ohio Conference and led our Services Work Group with grace and compassion. A large concern of hers was the self-care of our staff. Our staff, especially our DSP’s, work hard for many long hours a day. She knew we had staffing shortages because of our location and the high needs of the individuals in the Care Center.

For many years, she had a dream that was shared by the Senior Leadership here at Flat Rock: a room just for the employees. Together, they planned a room where staff could take respite, even for a few minutes out of a busy, sometimes hectic, day. Thanks to a donation from Tiffin Faith United Methodist Church, located in Tiffin, Ohio, we were able to fulfill the Rev. Dr. Stultz’s dream of a room for the employees.

In an email to the staff at Flat Rock, President/CEO Karen Kilgo said “We give thanks for Valerie and the work she did as a part of the Flat Rock Board. We are grateful for her vision and leadership in this important area. She is missed by all of us at Flat Rock, but, through this new space, we can continue to remember her for many years to come.” This room will be an asset to our staff here at the Care Center. One staff member even said she was looking forward to taking a quick nap in there later.

We wouldn’t be able to continue our mission at Flat Rock without the devotion of our DSP’s and the sacrifices they make to care for those we serve. Thank you, DSP’s, and thank you to the family of Rev. Dr. Stultz, and to Tiffin Faith United Methodist Church.
